How to focus on keywords in UPSC Preparation? | UPSC CSE

Keywords are essential in answer writing. Most of the questions in the main exams are based on writing only. So you cannot just write theories and long answers. You need to understand the demand of the question and full fill all the demands in the question. 

So today we will be discussing how to focus on keywords that will help your approach in the Mains exam. Whenever you read a newspaper, See an important topic or the headlines. There you will notice the writer focusing on the main keywords. They repeat it again and again so that the writers understand the topic and see what is important. 

That is how you can approach the same method in your examination as well. First whenever you see a demanding question. You have to discuss the topic. This is the basic practice to understand the keywords and the process on how to focus on the keywords. 

Get all the ideas from the discussions and observe the perspectives from others’ points of view. Then you will have an idea of what is the common term in the discussion. What is the most used word in the discussion? That is your main keyword. 

Examine the question, and understand whether it has positive or negative aspects in them. Explain them in detail. You can also write the positives and negatives. Make sure that you balance them in a good way. Then Comment is an integral part of the writing process. 

It doesn’t require accurate facts, you can just comment in a neutral manner explaining the positives and negatives. But don’t just limit it to a single-line comment. Elaborate it a bit, and make sure that comments are without challenging the ideas of the constitution and government policies. 

The next step is to define your answer. The definition needs accuracy, the more precise definition you give, the better the will result. Focus on just the exact problem and write it out. Don’t try out alternatives and other stuff which would confuse the reader. 

After this, you have to focus on how far you agree about a certain topic. You can balance both sides of the argument. Or you can focus on why are you showing your agreement/disagreement with this topic. Last and the most important step is justification. Justification or your opinion is expected by the reader. 

So make sure that you express your opinion with clarity and conclude the topic at the end.
