Roles and Functions of an IAS Officer | UPSC CSE

Becoming an IAS Officer is one of the toughest works because it requires determination, consistency, and passion. That is why IAS officer is one of the most respected professions in the country today. The life of an IAS Officer will be filled with challenges because they have an opportunity in their hands to make a difference in society. Today we will know more in detail about the roles and functions of an IAS Officer.

Candidates who cleared the UPSC Civil Services Exam will soon join the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration(LBSNAA). There you will learn the day-to-day life activities of an IAS officer. The training is very disciplined and here is how the schedule begins.

∙ Morning exercise or horse riding training for 60minutes which begins at 6 AM.

∙ Free time for other morning activities from 7 AM to 9 AM.

∙ From 9:30 AM there will be an academic activity that includes lectures, sports, and other extra activities. This will be around 8-10 hours every day. The trainees will also participate in the nearby rural areas trekking to understand the lifestyle of the people. The training also includes Bharat Darshan.

Once the trainee becomes an IAS Officer, the schedule changes according to their post. The IAS Officer fieldwork begins at 9 AM and it involves various reports, supervising the multiple daily tasks of the department, and visiting different areas.

Role of an IAS Officer

The Role of an IAS Officer depends upon the type of assignment they are allotted to. There are three types of assignments which include Field, State Secretariat, and Central Secretariat.

∙ The Field Assignments will include maintenance of law and order, and overseeing developmental, and administrative activities. Handling the affairs of the government which include farming, and reviewing policies. Consulting with various departments and elected representatives to discuss the plan. Supervising the scheme and policies of the government.

∙ Whenever a natural disaster, major accidents, and riots occur in the posted area, IAS Officers should respond to the emergencies quickly and implement relief activities.

∙ The State Secretariat Assignments will be more challenging as the IAS officers have to use their experience and expertise gained in the field assignments to formulate policies and make decisions about government processes.

∙ The Central Secretariat Assignments will deal with Policy review, formulation, and implantation of different ministries. Some of the IAS officers are also included in the International bodies of the United Nations and other countries.

Salary of an IAS Officer.

The basic pay of a newly appointed IAS Officer is Rs 56100/-. There are total of 18 levels for an IAS officer and the highest pay includes Rs 250000/- They will also get some other aspects like:

1. Government accommodation for the officer.

2. Household help like cooks, gardeners, and security will also be provided to the officer.

3. Government transportation is provided in the district and state level posting.

4. Reimbursement of Mobile, Internet, and Telephone charges

5. Free stay in government rest houses during duty.

6. A monthly pension is entitled to the officer after they retire.

Conclusion: So this is all about the roles and functions of an IAS Officer. The work and responsibility of an IAS Officer are challenging and also stressful at some times. There are benefits and perks associated with the work but it is all about handling the work perfectly and responding to the situations.
