Earth Observing System (EOS): Global Earth Monitoring System | UPSC Geography

Earth Observing System is an interesting program of NASA comprising a series of artificial satellite missions and scientific instruments in Earth Orbit that is designed for long-term global observations of the atmosphere, and oceans. It includes spy satellites and there are also used for environmental monitoring, cartography, and others. The most common satellite used is aerial photographs. Right now, India has approximately 53 operational satellites out of 21 earth observation satellites

Uses Of Earth Observation System

1)Environmental Monitoring: They are used to assist in environmental monitoring like Earth’s vegetation, atmospheric, sea state, ocean color, and ice fields because the vegetation changes over time.

2)Land Resources: They are used for the effective management of our natural resources is one of the major aspects for sustaining a good economy and moving forward.

3)Rural Development: There are various programs that are carried out by ISRO addressing the country’s development priorities for planning, monitoring, and impact assessment.

4)Water Resources: Remote sensing satellites help to manage water resources and the synoptic coverage and possibilities of revisiting from the EO constellation of satellites.

Types Of Earth Observation System Satellites

· EOS-01 is used to aid agriculture, forestry, and disaster management.

· EOS-03 is used for real-time imaging, quick monitoring of natural disasters, and signatures of agriculture and forestry.

· EOS-04 is used for Radar Imaging Satellites to provide high-quality images in all weather conditions.

· EOS-05 used for Geostationary Orbit Earth Observation Satellite.·

EOS-06 is designed for ocean-related services such as potential fishing zone and ocean state forecasts.
