What is Space Diplomacy? | UPSC International Relations

  • 05 Sep, 2024
  • Com 0

Space Diplomacy is the practice of using space to conduct foreign affairs and gain advancement in the national interests. Space has become a new venue for globally powerful countries to compete and create dominance. By doing so, the countries will get international recognition, and status.

Space as an instrument in Indian Foreign Policy

Space will be a major instrument for India because we share the fruits of developments of the latest space technologies with neighbors, and it will also help us to boost and project India’s soft power and goodwill among the globally powerful countries. India’s ISRO has offered a cheaper alternative to launching satellites for other foreign countries. It will also be important for India to counterattack China with the latest space technology. China has advanced satellite tracking that not only tracks but also blinds the other satellites. By collaborating with other foreign countries, we can fight the Chinese influence on space. This will also improve the bilateral relations between India and other foreign countries.

Related bodies of Space

A platform for the development of International space law is the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Use of Outer Space. In this committee, five international treaties have been concluded that are

1. The Outer Space Treaty helps to regulate the activities of states in the exploration and use of outer space.

2. The Moon Agreement helps to govern the activities of states on the Moon and other celestial bodies.

3. The Rescue Agreement deals with the rescue of Astronauts, the return of Astronauts, and the return of objects launched into Outer Space.

4. The Liability convention helps to understand the International liability for damage caused by space objects.

5. The registration convention deals with the registration of objects launched into Outer Space.

India’s Initiatives in Space Diplomacy.

1. India has authorized SAARC nations to use its NAVIC regional positioning system, and they also partnered with other nations.

2. India partnered with NASA during the Chandrayan Mission which found water on the moon.

3. The Indian satellite data is widely exchanged with friendly countries for astronomy research.

4. In the year 2021, the Indian-Myanmar Friendship center for Remote sensing was founded. South Asia Satellite’ is launched by ISRO to provide various South Asian countries with communication application that includes telemedicine, emergency management, e-governance, and finance.

India’s development in Space is gradually increasing with each day. The country is collaborating with other countries for astronomical research and getting the latest space technology which would help India to put on the top of the world map.
