What Are The Properties Of Tsunamis? | UPSC Geography

  • 22 Aug, 2024
  • Com 0

Tsunamis are large and destructive waves that are caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides. They can also be caused by asteroid impacts. These massive waves can travel across ocean basins, causing widespread destruction along coastlines and low-lying areas.

Wave Height

The height of a tsunami wave can vary greatly, depending on the location and magnitude of the earthquake or other event that caused it. In general tsunamis can range from just a few centimeters in height to over 30 meters.

Wave Speed

Tsunamis can travel at incredibly high speeds, sometimes reaching up to 700km/hour in the open ocean. As the waves approach shore, their speed decreases, but their height increases, leading to greater destruction.

Wave length

The wavelength of a tsunami is the distance between two wave crests. Tsunami wavelengths can range from a few kilometers to hundreds of kilometers, which is why they can travel across entire ocean basins.

Frequency

The frequency of a tsunami is the number of waves that pass a fixed point in a given time period. Tsunamis typically have a low frequency, meaning that they make take several minutes or even hours to pass.

Tsunamis are powerful and destructive waves that can cause widespread devastation. Understanding their properties is crucial for developing effective warning systems and disaster plans to minimize the impact of these natural disasters.
