Types Of Species And Their Significance | UPSC Environment

There is various range of species on this planet and they exhibit different types of characteristics and perform different functions that help them to adjust to the environment and the major changes that happen around them. 

1)Priority Species. 

The priority species are the ones that act upon to restore or improve the ecological balance. They are given the priority because they help to develop and strengthen habitats, and they also indicate high needs of conservation practices, and some species are also important to specific cultures. 

Examples: Bears, Big Cats, Elephants, Rhinos, Sharks and Rays. 

2)KeyStone Species 

Keystone species are the ones that play an essential role towards the productivity of ecosystem at defined level. If these species disappear, then it may lead to a major change in the ecosystem. 

Examples: Sharks, Beavers, Wood Peckers, Wolves, and Starfish. 

3)Indicator Species 

Indicator Species are the chosen as Indicators to represent the state of the ecosystem. They bring an perfect balance within the ecosystem and the presence of the species produces a certain natural process within that ecosystem. 

Examples: Frogs, Algal Blooms, and River Otters

4)Flagship Species Flagship Species are widely known species and they are relatively large species. They are attractive and well known. They are used by the organizations to serve as a symbol, icon or an ambassador for a certain topic. 

Examples: Bengal Tigers, Asian elephants, Giant Panda. 

5)Umbrella Species Umbrella Species require large habitats, and their protection also involves protecting the entire ecosystem they belong. Most of the umbrella species are nominated to the flagship species because the species aims to conserve the ecosystem totally. 

Examples: African Gorillas.

The species have their own functions and display various characteristics that are quite dependent on the environment around them. It is important to know that each species in this nature has its significance and plays a vital role to balance the environmental process.
