The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote the protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs) worldwide. WIPO was established in 1967, and its headquarters are located in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mandate and Functions of WIPO

The primary mandate of WIPO is to promote the protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs) globally. WIPO achieves this by performing various functions such as:

  • Developing and Harmonizing International IP Standards: WIPO develops and harmonizes international IP standards, including treaties, agreements, and guidelines, to ensure a consistent and coherent framework for the protection of IPRs worldwide.
  • Administering IP Rights: WIPO administers various international treaties and agreements related to IPRs, such as the Madrid System for the International Registration of Trademarks and the Hague System for the International Registration of Industrial Designs.
  • Dispute Resolution: WIPO provides services for the settlement of intellectual property disputes through arbitration and mediation, which helps to resolve disputes in a cost-effective and timely manner.
  • Building Capacity: WIPO provides technical assistance and capacity building programs to developing countries to help them develop and strengthen their IP systems.
  • Policy and Advocacy: WIPO carries out policy research, analysis, and advocacy to promote the importance of IPRs in driving innovation, creativity, and economic growth.
  • Global IP Databases: WIPO provides global IP databases, including the WIPO Patent Database and the WIPO Global Brand Database, which enables users to access information on millions of patents, trademarks, and designs.
  • Outreach and Communication: WIPO engages in outreach and communication activities to raise awareness about the importance of IPRs and WIPO’s work in promoting their protection and enforcement.
