The Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) was launched in India in 1983 to develop indigenous missile technology for the country’s defense needs. The program was a significant milestone in India’s defense capabilities, as it gave the country self-reliance in missile technology.

Objectives:

The primary objectives of the IGMDP were to develop the following types of missiles:

  • Surface-to-Surface Missiles (SSM)
  • Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM)
  • Anti-Tank Missiles (ATM)
  • Anti-Ship Missiles (ASM)

Achievements:

The IGMDP achieved significant success during its implementation phase. Here are some of the notable achievements of the program:

  • The development of Prithvi, a short-range ballistic missile that can carry nuclear warheads.
  • The development of Agni, a medium to an intercontinental-range ballistic missile that can deliver nuclear warheads.
  • The development of Akash, a surface-to-air missile system used to protect vital areas and installations.
  • The development of Nag, an anti-tank missile that can destroy tanks and other armoured vehicles.
  • The development of BrahMos, a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed with Russia.
