Penalty Marking in UPSC Examination? | UPSC CSE

Mains examination is one of the important aspects of the UPSC. Those who have qualified in the prelims will get an opportunity to write mains and then there will be the interview Please go through it thoroughly and make sure that you don’t violate any instructions.So today we will be discussing in detail the penalty marks in UPSC Mains. 

In the main question paper, you will have two language papers, Paper A and Paper B. Remaining all other papers will determine your rank. Your score will be out of a total of 1750marks. So you must score at least 25% on each paper. The candidates will be given answer sheets provided by the UPSC to write their answers. 

No extra sheets are provided. Every mark is important in UPSC. Because even if you lose one mark then there will be a great difference in the ranking. So make sure that you write your answers carefully and properly. 

In the UPSC instructions, it is given that there will be a penalty marking of 25 marks in the examination. The Commission has the discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination. Marks will not be allotted for mere superficial knowledge. Whenever it is required, SI units will be used in the question papers. Candidates are allowed to use of scientific calculators. You must follow the instructions of the Commission. 

The handwriting of the aspirants should be Legible which means the examiner should understand what they have written. If they don’t understand what you wrote then there is a chance of getting penalty marksThere shouldn’t be any religious signs or any other extra writing on the booklet. 

For this also there will be huge penalty marking. You cannot write appealing directly or indirectly to the examiner. You cannot write abusive, or threatening remarks in the paper. The penalty marking can make a huge impact on the final list. If the aspirant gets a penalty mark then there is a higher chance of excluding them from the final list. 

Please do not anything relevant or irrelevant beyond the margin. One more important thing to notice is that you need write your name anywhere, only your roll number is enough. Mention what language you are using to write the examination. Answering in mixed language medium is not recommended in the examination. 

You cannot write the answer in two languages. Make sure that you maintain the same language throughout the whole question paper. One more thing to notice here is that if you are using a pen to write the answers, use the same ink pen for the whole examination. Do not write the answer partly in Ink and partly in pencil which can bring you penalty marks. You can use pencil if there are any sketches or flow charts. 

To get good marks on the exam, make sure that you fill the sheet properly and neatly. If you wrote any wrong answer, just draw a box around and cancel it slightly and write the answer beneath the question. Do not strike off the question and paste it somewhere else. So make sure that you follow the instructions given by the commission and don’t violate them. As we have mentioned above that every mark in UPSC is important. Maintain the word count for the very answer and don’t write anything that violates the rules of the commission. Do not write on the borders and mark anything. If you are using numerical, make sure that you use only international standard ones.
