Ecological Succession- Climax Community, Range of Tolerance, Maximum Range | UPSC Environment

Ecological Succession is a natural process by which the species and habitat in an area change over time. The communities in this succession replace one another. Succession is a process by which an ecological community undergoes more or less orderly and predictable changes following a disturbance of a new habitat.

Ecological Succession Pattern

Climax Community The ecological community in which populations of plants or animals remain stable and exist in balance with each other and their environment. In this succession, the Climax community is the last and final stage, once the succession comes up to the climax community remains relatively unchanged

Range of Tolerance The relationship exists between a number of environmental factors and how well organisms grow. Environmental factors can either help an organism grow or prevent it from growing. The organisms have a range of tolerance for environmental factors. The range will be high and low extremes of tolerance for an environmental factor. The organisms have specific requirements for successful growth, development, and reproduction.

Maximum Range The Maximum range of ecological succession is all about the upper and lower limits to the range of particular environmental factors such as temperature, availability of water, and light within which an organism can survive. Most organisms have a wide range of tolerance and they are usually distributed widely. The species with a narrow range have a restricted distribution. For example, some animals survive in different environments only like the polar bear in the colder regions of Antarctica.

How Ecological Succession Helps Us?

Ecological succession is an interesting aspect to understand the process of nature and the tolerance levels of species depend on the methods of survival. The ability of an organism to withstand extreme variation in the environmental conditions that affect their survival.
