Essays are important aspects of UPSC. The Mains Exam contains a paper on essay writing and in this, you will be asked to write two essays. There will be no syllabus and the topic could be anything like general, socio-economic, history, environment, and others. Within three hours you have to finish two essays.
There are four types of essays in UPSC which are listed below and today we will also discuss how does a good essay should look like.
Narrative Essay– In a narrative essay, the writer should narrate an incident or event in detail. They have to write down the incident filled with facts, what happened during the incident and what was the result. Right from the beginning to the end, there should be no breaks in narration and every line should be in connection with others.
Descriptive Essay– A descriptive essay is something in which the writer has to describe an event, process, and condition in detail. In a descriptive essay, you have to use your language creatively and convey to the reader an image of whatever you are writing. Most descriptive essays often ask you to describe something from your own experience.
Persuasive Essay– A Persuasive essay is one of the important types of Essays in UPSC. This essay is something in which you have to convince the reader of the topic by providing types of logic and ethical arguments. The essay always begins with a question and the writer has to argue in favor or opposition to it. It should be backed up with a combination of data, research, and experience.
Informative Essay– An informative essay is something in which the writer has to educate the reader on a particular topic. The writer has to define a term, compare, and analyze the data. The essay addresses the topic by placing it in a larger context.
These are the types of essays in UPSC and remember that every good essay should be clear, and coherent throughout, and it should be written in simple yet good and accurate language. The essay should be balanced, and it shouldn’t be argumentative and negative.
