What Is The Relation Between India and UNSC? | UPSC International Relations

The United Nations Security Council(UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations(UN) responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

India has been actively seeking a permanent seat on the UNSC, which is currently held by five countries, namely, the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom.

India is one of the largest and fastest-growing economies in the world and played a vital role in maintaining global peace and stability. India has been a non-permanent member of the UNSC seven times in the past and has always been a vocal advocate for peace, security, and development.

India’s Perspective On UNSC Reforms

India has been a strong advocate of UNSC reforms and has been pushing for a transparent and representative global governance system. India has been calling for the expansion of the UNSC to reflect the changing global realities, including the increasing economic and political influence of emerging powers.

India has also proposed a 10 point reform agenda for the UNSC which includes the expansion of both permanent and non permanent seats that ensures greater representation for developing countries.

Challenges Faced by India to join the UNSC

Despite the growing support for India’s joining for a permanent seat on the UNSC, several challenges remain. One of the significant hurdles is the opposition from China, which has been blocking India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UNSC.

While several challenges remain, India’s efforts towards UNSC reforms and its active participation in global governance demonstrate its willingness to take on greater responsibilities in the international arena.
