Terms Used for understand the space | UPSC Science and Technology

There are many numbers of terminologies used by space organizations to understand the never-ending space, and these terms help us to identify various objects and space activities that are happening in the universe.

1)Andromeda Galaxy

Andromeda Galaxy is the closest Milky Way to the earth it is in a spiral shape and has a huge density of stars, dust, and gas. It is the only galaxy out there that can be seen from Earth with the help of basic telescopes. You can watch this galaxy clearly during monsoons and winter nights.

2)Asteroid

The asteroid is a big rock that is part of the other planets in the universe that have broken off due to a collision in space and they orbit around the Sun. Asteroid means star-like objects and they also get into orbital groupings called families and form asteroid belts as well.

3)Black Hole

Black Hole is the dense core remaining of a dead star. It has three times more density than the sun, and the strong force of gravity produces a black hole. Some scientists believe that there is entirely another universe inside the black holes, and whatever objects come closer to the black hole will be pulled into it.

4)Comet

Comets are frozen balls of gas, rocks, and dust. They gain their bright glow by emitting gas that pass close to the sun and some comets have tails resulting in the glowing tail. We can witness various comets passing close to the earth, and it is a very beautiful phenomenon that is rarely visible.

5)Light Year

Light Year is an astronomical concept with which the distance is measured with the help of the speed of light. One light year is approximately 6 trillion miles(9.5 trillion kilometers) per year.

6)Meteor

Meteors are rocky objects or asteroid that vaporizes when they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. They are also called shooting stars, and they have glowing tails as they enter the atmosphere. We can witness meteor showers in various places.

These are some of the basic terminologies used by scientists to identify the objects and the activities going on in space.
