How Was The Harappan Trade? | UPSC History

Harappan Civilization was one of the earliest urban civilizations. The proof of these civilizations and their lifestyle were found by the archaeologists. They claim that Harappa was a land of development and cultural economy. Today we will be discussing in detail the Harappan Trade. 

Harappan Civilization was surrounded by rivers and the land was fertile. People started learning agriculture and cultivated various crops which were traded by them to other people. Crops like cotton, wheat, barley, sesame, and mustard were marketed to other people. 

There has been quite some significant evidence about the Harappan trade. They not only traded with the people around them but expanded their work to other parts of India and also with many countries in Asia as well. 

The Harappans carried on trade in stone, metal, and shell within their civilization zone. They exchanged money through barter. They also had commercial contacts with western neighbors. The Harappans were also experts in making Pots, plates, and glasses out of mud and clay. 

The traders used to bring the required material to the workers, and collect the finished product for trading. The Harappan people used to trade with foreign lands by traveling through seas. They had traded with Iran, and Afghanistan for minerals. They also imported Jade from China and Cedarwood which traded through the rivers like Indus, Sutlej, and Ravi. 

The Harappans also developed hand-made balances for weighing things and used equal size and weighing stones for measurement purposes. The archaeologists also found that Harrapans were skilled sculptors, they prepared a statue of a bearded man and a bronze statue of a dancing girl. 

The goldsmiths also made jewelry of gold, and silver which were worn by both men and women as a necklace. 

So this is all about Harappan Trade and their expertise in making sculptures, jewelry, agricultural growth, and trading work. Harappa was a great city and it had amazing resources through which people started understanding how to take advantage of the resources available around the place.
