How the India-China Border Dispute Is Impacting Global Security? | UPSC International Relations

The India-China border dispute is a territorial dispute happening between the two major countries. India and China share a 3,488-kilometer border, and the entire border is in dispute. The line that separates the two countries is known as the McMahon Line. 

The relationship between the two countries India and China has been worsening and they are facing off against each other along the border in the Himalayan region. The two nations are also competing amongst themselves to build the best infrastructure along the border which is called the Line Of Actual Control(LAC). 

Why is the India-china border dispute happening?

The Indian government has argued that China claims the territory on the basis that it was under the Chinese empire in the past. On the other hand, the Chinese government is arguing that India claims the territory on the basis that it was under British imperial control in the past.

The situation is getting worse with each day, despite the military talks, and other authorities’ discussions. The tensions continue along the border. 

The Galwan Valley battle in 1975 was fought with sticks and clubs. Another face-off happened in January 2021 which left the troops on both sides injured. The battle happened between Bhutan and Nepal. 

 In 2021, India accused China of firing into the air. As per the 1996 agreement, it was prohibited to use guns and explosives near the border. In the year 1962, the two countries fought only one war, and India suffered a defeat. But both countries evolved and now they are established as nuclear powers. The military power is growing, and if the war happens again both countries will have equal damage to pay for. 

Recently on December 9th, 2022, China troops and Indian troops, A clash happened between them along the LAC in the Tawang heights. According to the sources, 70 to 80 Indian troops have mobilized the 300 Chinese troops. There was intense hand-to-hand combat with sticks and canes for a few hours.

Right now, both countries do not want to give up the disputed territories, but the Chinese are planning to acquire every piece of land that was once a part of their empire. This border issue will only be resolved through diplomatic and military discussions, and a clear LAC is required between the two nations.
