The United Nations(UN) is an intergovernmental organization formed in 1945 after World War II to maintain international peace and security, promote human rights, and facilitate cooperation among nations. 

United Nations Bodies

  • The General Assembly is the main body of the UN, consisting of all member states. It meets annually to discuss global issues and adopt new resolutions. The Security council is responsible for maintaining international peace and security and has 15 members,. 
  • The International court of justice settles legal disputes between states and gives advisory opinions on the legal questions.
  • The UN also has several agencies such as the World Health Organization(WHO) which works to promote public health.
  • The United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF) provides humanitarian assistance to children worldwide
  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) promotes education, scientific research, and cultural heritage preservation.
  • The United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) aims to eradicate poverty, improve human development, and advance progress on environmental sustainability.
  • The World Food Progamme(WFP) is the largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger worldwide. It provides food assistance to those in need during emergencies and helps communities build resilience to future crises.
