Making foreign policies is quite complex and a very long process. Some host of individuals, institutions and other experts with the required knowledge and technical support are involved in it. The Prime Minister Of India is the executive head of the government. It is expected that the PM should be well-versed in the policy initiatives of the government because foreign policies are one of the most important aspects of governmental activities.
Over the past few years, Prime Minister has been very alert and participative in the process of foreign policy. The secretariat provides technical support to the Prime minister to enable him to keep track of the activities of the government and provide valuable inputs and guidance to various agencies.
PMO plays a major role in making foreign policies, and the policy decisions that are taken by the MEA are presented before the PMO for approval of the Prime minister. Foreign policy comes to the final shape only when they get approval from the Prime Minister. Prime Minister also takes inputs provided by the National Security Advisor because they keep the PM updated on the latest activities going on inside and outside of the country.
In the complicated process of foreign policy making, individuals, institutions, and experts discharge their responsibilities directly. Even though in charge of running the foreign affairs of the country and are handled by MEA but they don’t have all the knowledge, and input on diverse issues and the challenges that are being faced by India. That is why without the approval of the PMO, foreign policies will not be put into action.
