What are the Models Of Energy Flow? | UPSC Science And Technology

  • 03 Sep, 2024
  • Com 0

Energy flow is a basic process that happens in all ecosystems. Energy is required to do any work, and it completely depends upon the food they consume. There are some models of energy flow that help us to understand how energy is transferred from one species to another.

1) Single-Channel Energy Flow Model

In this model, the components used are the light, heat, import, export, and storage of organic matter. The decomposers that play a major part in the food web and food chain are placed entirely outside the box. The energy flow model shows us the flow of energy at each trophic level and how there is a progressive decrease in the energy flows

2)Y-Shaped energy flow model

The Y-Shaped energy flow model is complex, but it is also efficient. It was proposed by H.T.Odum in 1956. The model is designed in the shape of the letter ‘ Y’. In this model, one arm describes the herbivores species food chain and the other arm describes the decomposers’ food chain. It helps us to understand the natural process of the energy flow and it is considered as a most realistic structure of an ecosystem.

3)Universal model of energy flow

The universal model of energy flow was developed by E.P.Odum in 1983. In this model, we see the energy that is consumed by the organism at various trophic levels is reduced because of respiration and exertion. Because of these two factors, the energy available for the next trophic level is less. This model is applicable to any living component whether it is a plant, animal, or any individual.

The energy flow models of the ecosystem help us to understand the natural process and how species rely upon each other for survival and how the energy is consumed between the species. There are external factors like respiration, and exertion that play a major change in energy consumption. Every energy model has its significance and components to help us understand the work of an ecosystem.
